Designers recommend upgrades to elevate small kitchens

While a small kitchen can feel cluttered, designers recommend small upgrades throughout to elevate the space and boost functionality. Vertical storage space, readily accessible appliances and decorative cabinet inserts are just a few of the trends designers predict will take the spotlight in kitchen renovations in 2026.

“In compact spaces, visual noise magnifies quickly,” says Kimberly Oxford of Kimberly Oxford Interiors. “Fully integrated, panel-ready appliances are becoming less of a luxury and more of a necessity. They allow the cabinetry to carry the visual weight of the room and create a seamless envelope, which in turn makes the kitchen feel larger.”

Tighter and minimal color palettes make a smaller kitchen feel luxurious, despite the limited amount of space. Built-ins are another useful kitchen upgrade for designers to consider during renovations.

“One small kitchen trend I’m particularly excited about for 2026 is the use of built-ins to bridge the kitchen with adjacent areas,” says Jennifer Kole of Jenami Designs. “In my designs for smaller spaces, I incorporate built-ins to link two rooms together. This approach keeps the open space cohesive, making a smaller kitchen feel significantly larger while providing a more intentional, designed look.”
